Game Theory, Studio Painting and Psychonautical Techniques

I use google earth and chance to make this series of areial landscape paintings. This is inspired by my project, Wherever You Are is the Center of the World, with collaborator, Hari Kirin. It's a museum show and is on exhibition at the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center (BMAC) until July 3, 2011.  www.brattleboromuseum.org

It took one year for two of us to paint four 6' x 6' oil paintings each. And when the paintings were finished in April 2011, I missed the daily "throw of the dice" and painting what I saw on google earth. So I am again happily painting daily and this is how it works: I use numbered stones randomly selected to get latitude and longitude locations which I type into google earth; and what appears on the screen is what I paint for the day! I am painting all over the world.

So in the continued spirit and love of chance and games, I paint a 10" x 10" oil painting on canvas each day. (M-F) I use deep edge, 1-1/2" artists' canvas made of natural cotton duck, triple-coated with acid-free sizing and two coats of highly pigmented acrylic primer. The canvas is stretched by hand on kiln-dried, beveled stretcher bars and stapled in back, making frames optional.

See some examples below:

This painting's imagery is a google earth aerial view of where I live in New Hampshire.

Here is an example of what I mean by combining paintings together, there are nine in this installation. These locations include, Italy, Russia, Iceland, and Four Oceans.

Here are three photos of the museum exhibition:
